Volunteering in Lyhty/Art and textile workshop Luovilla
Lyhty's Art and Textile workshop Luovilla located in Helsinki, Finland, offers daily activities for adults with intellectual disabilities. They develop skills as artisans and artists based on their own strengths. Activities are focusing on individual resources, creativity, and expression through crafts. The clients practice every day and professional skills such as craft, textile designer, salesman and visualist. The clients are assisted by cultural and social work professionals. The role of the volunteer is to support and assist the workshop clients with the professionals working at Luovilla. During your volunteer year you might become familiar with various assistive devices, such as wheelchairs, walkers, and specialized eating aids. You might familiarize yourself with the social, physical, and mental well-being of the clients. You will also learn about the needs of support regarding various behavioral challenges that might come along with intellectual disabilities.

A quién buscan
Good social skills and motivation to work with people with intellectual disabilities are important. The work can be dynamic at times and requires such mentality. It is important to have the motivation to learn Finnish language. The participants have learned e.g. the following things: Responsibility, guidance, the field of developmental disability, equality, organization, organization of activities, language skills, cultural knowledge, dignity, resilience to pressure, flexibility, social and health care, cooking, cleaning and housekeeping etc. Interest in and knowledge of crafts is considered an advantage. We are open to all participants but we prior participants with less opportunities meaning people who, for economic, social, cultural, geographical or health reasons, a migrant background, or for reasons such as disability and educational difficulties or for any other reasons have less opportunities. Please inform us about eventual fewer opportunities in your motivation letter.

Alojamiento y comidas
The volunteer will receive every month money for food and gets meals from Lyhty ry. Volunteer will have a room in a shared accommodation with other volunteers. The accommodation will be fully equipped and electricity, water and gas will be covered by the hosting organization. The volunteer works 5 days per week from Monday till Friday, 35h per week. Working hours are between 8-16. There is an entitlement to holidays for 2 days per month, altogether holidays days that can be taken after consulting with the Lyhty’s team. Volunteer gets the public transportation card from Lyhty.
